In colonial times, candle holders were forged in metal. A special kind was one with spirals. This was called a Courting Candle. As the candle burned down to the spirals it reminded the suitor that it was time to leave.

You will need:

  • 18 Gauge craft wire - any color
  • 24 Gauge craft wire - any color
  • Needle nose pliers

Instructions:

1. Cut 18 gauge wire into short lengths (about 21¼2 " to 3” ). Form each piece into flat spirals using needle nose pliers to start a tight loop in the center. Bend a tight loop into opposite end of wire. Make several spirals.
2. Cut additional pieces of wire 3" - 5" in length. Shape wire into "S" shapes by forming a spiral at each end. You will need to make several.
3. Wire the spirals and “S” shapes together by wrapping tightly with short lengths wherever two pieces touch. Form your structure around the candle or object you are wrapping, checking often to obtain a nice fit. If you are making a

“sleeve”, simply join the spirals and “S” shapes to make a cylinder slightly larger than the diameter of the candle. If you are making a holder, start by forming the bottom first, then work up the sides.

Hint: Wrap the candle with wax paper or foil while working with the wire to avoid scratching it when you check the fit.

Optional: If desired, use additional lengths of 24 gauge wire to wrap beads around the finished piece.
